With Southampton's oldest walking group ( probably )
86 years old and still going strong - every weekend
Walk This Way
Ideally suited for walkers over 50, who enjoy walking in the countryside with like-minded companions, we walk every weekend, on alternate Saturdays and Sundays, and on Bank Holidays. Chosen to be within an hour's drive of Southampton, our rambles are usually 6-8 miles in length. Walking at around 2 miles per hour, we keep a steady but gentle pace, stopping to look at anything of interest or just to admire the view. We generally carry our own refreshments, with a coffee break and picnic lunch. (And prepare for weather & ocasional mud!)
Once a month (on a Thursday) there's a shorter walk (up to 3 miles) followed by a lunch in a pub or café. Also monthly (Tuesday) we have a social afternoon, with tea and cakes, or centred around a speaker of general interest to the Group.
At least once a year we organise a week's led walking holiday, and a coach outing.
Southampton HF group was founded in 1931, as the Southampton offshoot of the surge in interest in outdoor activities. In the UK this movement was spearheaded by Thomas Arthur Leonard who helped create numerous organisations, including Friends of the Lake District, YHA, Ramblers, and HF Holidays.
Cost: There is a charge of £1.oo per member/guest per day walk. This is to cover the cost of running the group. Members also have the option of paying for one year of unlimited walks. This is due in January of each year, and is currently £10.oo (£19.oo for a couple at the same address.) The social afternoon is £3.oo and includes tea and biscuits.
